Deutschland, kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Der Aufsatz in der Deutschstunde zum Thema „Die Freuden der Pflicht“ will dem als schwer erziehbar eingestuften Siggi Jespen in der „Besserungsanstalt“ nicht gelingen.

Als er deshalb von der Gruppe isoliert wird, suchen ihn plötzlich längst verdrängte Erinnerungen in Form von Rückblenden heim.

1968 erschien Siegfried Lenz’ erfolgreichster Roman Deutschstunde, in dem der Autor das anhaltende Schweigen der Väter über die NS-Zeit anprangert und eine Aufarbeitung der jüngeren deutschen Geschichte forderte. Eindrucksvolle Neuverfilmung.
