Maurice ist ein geschäftstüchtiger Kater, der auf der Scheibenwelt mit einer Truppe schlauer Ratten unterwegs ist. Man veranstaltet Rattenplagen, organisiert die Befreiung mit Hilfe eines Flötenspielers und teilt sich den Lohn. Das funktioniert, bis die Ratten auf ein Buch der Menschen stoßen, das bei ihnen ein soziales Gewissen und nationalen Ehrgeiz weckt. Sie beschließen, ein eigenes Königreich zu gründen…
