Il primo film sonoro di Lang è uno dei capolavori del cinema tedesco d’anteguerra. I riferimenti al clima sociale della Repubblica di Weimar alla vigilia del nazionalsocialismo sono evidenti: le autorità e la malavita appaiono come organizzazioni simili che insieme danno la caccia ai devianti in nome di un sano sentimento popolare. Le sarcastiche descrizioni di Lang della caccia all’uomo e dell’isteria di massa, così come la geniale interpretazione di Peter Lorre dell’assassino come carnefice e vittima allo stesso tempo, furono percepite come sovversive dai nazionalsocialisti, e non senza ragione.
