THE FRENCH DISPATCH è un giornale francese basato nella città fittizia di Ennui-sur-Blasé. In onore del defunto fondatore Arthur Howitzer Jr. diverse storie di successo pubblicate in passato sul giornale vengono riportate in vita dai suoi dipendenti: Moses Rosenthaler, un pittore in prigione, trova una musa e un modello nella sua guardia Simone. La giornalista Lucinda Krementz inizia una relazione con il rivoluzionario Zeffirelli e dubita della sua integrità giornalistica. Un cronista ciclista scrive diari di viaggio dai peggiori angoli della città, e quando il figlio del commissario viene rapito, solo il cuoco può salvarlo.
